Maintenance & Cleaning
To keep your humidifier in good working order and free from mould, fungi and bacteria it is recommended that distilled or demineralised water be used when filling your humidifier.  If tap water is used please be aware that hard water contains minerals that can appear as lime deposits or scale inside the unit.  Water needs to be changed every day.  Humidifiers will not work if film or deposits build up. Empty the tank, dry the inside surfaces and fill with clean water every day.
Always remember to unplug the humidifier before carrying out the following procedures.
To remove any mineral build-up
1. Remove water tank and pour undiluted white vinegar into the base of the unit (enough to cover the base).
2. Allow the vinegar to soak into the humidifier for a minimum 30 minutes.  If there are any mineral deposits the vinegar will start to fizz.
3. Swirl the vinegar around in the base very carefully to redistribute making sure it coats the entire base.
4. Use a soft bristled brush to scrub stubborn deposits.
5. It may be necessary to add more vinegar and repeat steps 2-4 as the vinegar may become inactive after a while (stops fizzing).
6. Once the unit is clean pour the vinegar from the base, rinse with clean water, this will remove any residue.
7. The residue must not be allowed to remain in the unit so if necessary rinse again with cold water.
If the water in the base of your humidifier becomes slimy or has an odour you could have a bacteria build-up.
1. Empty any water currently in the base and fill with clean water.
2. Add a mild solution of liquid bleach (Milton) and allow to soak for at least 30 minutes.
3. Gently pour the solution down the drain being careful not to spill any.
4. Rinse with clean water until the smell of bleach dissipates.
